Event OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

The Rock Ultra is a trail running event set on the slopes of Paarl Mountain.

Defined by granite terrain, fynbos, and open mountain landscapes, the routes follow natural lines across the mountain — linking sustained climbs, technical sections, and runnable terrain.

This is a mountain-first experience. Simple in structure, honest in design, and grounded in the landscape.

LOCATION

All races start and finish at the Afrikaans Language Monument (Taal Monument) in Paarl.

The venue provides direct access to the mountain and serves as the central race village throughout the event.

THE EXPERIENCE

The Rock Ultra is built around movement on the mountain.

Expect:

  • Granite underfoot

  • Exposure to the elements

  • Routes that reward awareness and pacing

The race village remains active throughout Saturday, with runners finishing across the morning and into the afternoon, building a strong shared atmosphere.

EVENT FORMAT

The event takes place over two days:

Friday:
100km race start (evening)

Saturday
44km, 22km, 12km and 5km races
Finish line activity and prize giving

All routes are fully marked and supported with aid stations.

WHO IT’S FOR

From short, accessible distances to a demanding overnight ultra, each route offers a complete experience within its category.

The Rock Ultra is structured to allow runners to progress over time:

5km → 12km → 22km → 44km → 100km

Each step increases distance, elevation, and technical demand, allowing you to build experience on the same mountain.

ITRA-LISTED

The Rock Ultra is an ITRA-listed race, meaning it is officially recognised by the International Trail Running Association. Runners who complete the longer distances can earn ITRA Performance Index points and qualifying credits used for entry into other major international trail events. This recognition reflects the quality of the course, organisation, and mountain environment, and places The Rock Ultra within the global trail running landscape.

EVENT ETHOS

The Rock Ultra is built on respect:

  • For the environment

  • For the community

  • For landowners

Participants are expected to follow a leave-no-trace approach at all times.
